history of computers in Canada

In 1953, Trans-Canada Airlines created the first computer based airline reservation system on a Manchester Mark 1 computer at the University of Toronto. A commercial version, called ReserVec, using punched cards and a more modern transistor computer was introduced in 1962.

The University of Manitoba started using the Grex supercomputer on December 22, 2010. Grex is Latin for “herd” and is a reference to the schools’s bison symbol. The $8-million supercomputer is the province’s first energy-efficient High Performance Computing (HPC) system. At its introdcution it was the 44th fastest energy-efficient supercomputer in the world and the second fastest in Canada (as ranked by Green500), at more than 40 trillion floating point operations per second.

    Consumers Union’s Consumer Reports, an independent, non-profit consumer organization, claims that the following are the best computers for 2011:

    Consumer Reports claims that the best times to purchase a computer are January, April, June, and October.
